Healthy Eating, Simple Living – Make It Stick

Bad habits are hard to break, but the reverse is true too. Good habits, once engrained are also hard to break. Starting healthy eating guidelines with kids when they are young is a good way to set them on a lifetime path of healthy eating.

With kids, you never know what is going to stick. Rules that are simple (and funny) are more easily remembered.

Here are some of our family favorites:

  • You have to eat fruit before you have dessert. Then decide if you really need dessert.

  • Treats are for W days (Wednesdays and weekends).

  • If it is bigger than your face, you can’t eat it all.

  • You need to run a marathon to have Gatorade.

  • Drink water or milk; anything else counts as a treat.

  • Nutella is only for the weekend or vacations.

You never know what is going to stick.

You never know what is going to stick.

Other rules that we go by:

  • Don’t make assumptions.

  • Don’t take anything personally.

  • Always do your best.

  • “I want happiness” – remove the “I,” remove the “want,” and what you have is happiness.

What are the simple rules that you go by?

Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving!
